For myself I am an optimist - it does not seem to be much use being anything else.Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb. -Sir Winston Churchill

Wow.

So yeah, it's been awhile since I wrote on here.

Um, in case someone who actually checks this doesn't look at Facebook, I'm engaged now.

That's about it.

How did you meet your spouse or significant other?

First day of college, during orientation when you play games with your floor and your RA to get to know people. Her room was three doors down from mine on the same floor.

Of course, we didn't actually start dating until almost four years later, but that's a whole other story.

I just answered this Featured Question, you can answer it too!

Summer Update

So I'm here in Montville, still with no job, although I'm still holding out some hope for the campaign job I wanted. I just got an email from the McCain listserv letting me know that the New Jersey campaign HQ (yes, they're opening one!) is opening on Saturday in Woodbridge. If there's one 45 minutes from my house, and I'm trying to get a job with them, why have they not responded? I mean, even if they were just turning me down, it'd be nice to have an answer. On the plus side, if I seek other employment instead, it won't be too hard to volunteer sometimes if the HQ is that close.

What other employment? Well, I'm glad you asked. Or maybe I'm not, since I don't really have a clue. We'll have to see. I may try to get some sort of business internship type thing, or even a paid position if I could find one. I do have a bachelor's degree now, after all. I'm supposed to (according to my pre-law advisor) avoid law related jobs, but I might have the chance to work for a month or two for a law firm in London, and that sounds awesome enough that it might be worth it. All of this is up in the air at the moment, though, and made more complicated by my strong desire to stay in the New Jersey/New York area for the next year if at all possible. Hopefully something will be figured out soon.

In the meantime, I'm going to New Hampshire for the 4th of July, as usual, and staying up there until the 13th because we're having a big family reunion on the 12th. Should be interesting. There will be relatives there that I have not seen in quite awhile, and almost definitely some I have never seen at all. That's why family reunions of this nature are odd. These are people who are related to you by blood, yet you may have never met them before and you may never meet them again in your life, except at the next reunion. I mean, sure, they may be your 4th cousin twice removed on your mom's side, but it still feels like you ought to know them, even if you do live 400 miles apart. Eh. At the very least I'll get to see the family that I DO know well during this whole hullabaloo, so that will be pleasant.

I hope everyone is enjoying summer so far. For college students, it started awhile back when classes ended. For those of you who were in high school or not in any school at all, it just started a few days ago. Either way I hope it's been good to you. I suppose I'll post again once I know what's up with the job situation.

Looking Back on Four Years

I'm sitting here about to go to bed on graduation morning. It's about 3am, and in a little over 8 hours my graduation ceremony starts. 3 1/2 hours later I will officially be done here on the Banks of the Raritan.

It's been an amazing four years. I had no idea what to expect when I first got here. I was unsure about meeting people, I was worried about making new friends and finding my way to classes, and I felt the absence of my high school friends pretty keenly even though we were all dedicated to keeping in touch.

Four years later, of course, I know how it all turned out. I met some wonderful people, had some fantastic experiences, and still keep in touch with my high school friends. I can't ask for a whole lot more than that.

Rutgers has been good to me. For all of its problems, for all of the bitching I have done and will continue to do, it has been my home away from home for four years, and I will miss New Brunswick dearly after I leave tomorrow. I will miss the campus and the familiar buildings and landmarks, I will miss the restaurants that we frequented, and most of all I will miss all of the friends I have made here. I know we will all do our best to keep in touch with each other, and a few parties have already been planned with that in mind. Still, we will be splitting up, going our separate ways. Jill and Mike are already headed for Texas, and in a year who knows where the rest of us will be?

I just want to thank everyone in my life for the last four years. They've been better than I ever could have imagined. Well, except for the part where I met Monica, but every silver lining has its raincloud, so I guess I'll just have to take the bad with the good and make the best of it. Still, it is difficult, considering how much I hate her.

In just a few hours it all comes to an end. It's been a fantastic ride. I'll look back on it fondly even as I move on to whatever lies ahead.

For now, though, there are a few hours left in my time as a Rutgers student. I'm going to spend the next few of them asleep, and then do my best to enjoy graduation.
